At the preschool level, social studies is very informal. Children this age might be shown a globe or be introduced to the idea of a map. Simple history stories or visits to museums can help children begin to understand that the world is a place with many different places, people, and a past. Kindergarteners are able to begin understanding social studies on a more structured level, learning what a map really is and understanding how different people throughout the world and in the past have lived in different ways. Although it is not always necessary, some homeschoolers will begin using a formal social studies curriculum when their children begin kindergarten.
