Music & Art

Elementary students have a unique relationship to art and music, as creativity comes naturally to young children. As Picasso famously said, “every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”1 Homeschooling families have a special opportunity to nurture and encourage their children’s creative development, as they are not confined to the structured, proscribed environment of the traditional school system.

An important part of elementary artistic and musical education are the simple and organic experiences that come when you allow your children to play with art supplies and musical instruments. Yet many homeschoolers also choose to further nurture their elementary-aged children’s training in music and art through private lessons or directed curriculums. Offering children a well-rounded artistic education is also important to many homeschoolers – such an education might include exposure to music through playing an instrument or learning music history and theory; training in the fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, or photography) and being introduced to art history; and experiencing the performing arts, whether through dance classes or participation in a local theater.

There are many excellent homeschool art and music curriculum options available for elementary students. If you have questions or want more information, please email us!
