If you’re homeschooling a kindergartener, you may be wondering what sorts of manipulatives you’ll be needing to teach math. If you’re using a formal curriculum, it should provide a list of required manipulatives that you’ll want to purchase (click here to see our recommendations on homeschool math curriculums for kindergarten). Many parents, however, choose to teach kindergarten math without a formal curriculum, and even those who do use one will sometimes find it helps to have extra manipulatives to help their children gain a better grasp of particular math concepts.

In this article, we’ve listed some of our favorite math manipulatives that help build basic kindergarten-level math concepts. Many of these manipulatives will be useful for older children as well, and some are also great for preschool math. If you’re teaching preschool math at home, we highly recommend the book Preschool Math at Home by Kate Snow.
