At the preschool and kindergarten levels, language arts aims to introduce children to the basics of reading and writing – including the alphabet, phonics, handwriting, and exposure to quality literature. The preschool years will focus mainly on learning the alphabet and recognizing the letter sounds, developing hand control and beginning to form letters, listening to many good stories, and for some children, beginning the process of sounding out words. During kindergarten, the child will build on these skills to progress in phonics and handwriting. Many, though not all, homeschoolers choose to use a formal language arts curriculum when their children begin kindergarten.
