Is your child learning French at home? French is one of the world’s great languages, and fortunately there are many resources to help your child learn this language at home, even if you as the parent have no background in French. For this article, we’ve created a list of some of our favorite French homeschool supplements. Flashcards
- eeboo French Vocabulary Flashcards: this is an excellent, beautifully illustrated flashcard set. It includes 56 sturdy flashcards with basic vocabulary and a pronunciation guide.
- 192 French Beginning Vocabulary Flash Cards with Original Artwork: this is a wonderful illustrated flashcard set, great for all ages. Each card includes an illustration on one side and the French word on the reverse, making this a great set for reviewing and memorizing French vocabulary.
- 201 French Words You Need to Know Flashcards: this set by Barron is excellent for older kids and adults. These cards are illustrated with photographs and include proper pronunciation.
Coloring and Activity Books
- French Picture Dictionary Coloring Book by Lingo Mastery: this is a great activity and coloring book to complement your child’s French curriculum. The book includes almost 1,000 individual images (about 20 per page) along with corresponding French vocabulary.
- The Everything Kids’ Learning French Book by Dawn-Michelle Baude: this book is full of fun puzzles and activities that will help teach and reinforce French vocabulary. It’s ideal for kids ages 7-12.
Dictionaries
- French English Picture Dictionary by Catherine Bruzzone, et al: this is a great visual dictionary for the youngest kids. It includes over 350 common words with colorful illustrations.
- DK First French Dictionary: this is the perfect French dictionary for older elementary and middle-school kids. It includes over 2,000 common words and lots of illustrations.
- Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary French: this is our favorite French-English dictionary for high school kids and beyond. Its small size makes it easy to take on the go, but it is still sturdy and very comprehensive.
Games
- eeboo French Vocabulary Bingo: this is a well-made, beautifully illustrated Bingo game that will help your child with French vocabulary. It includes 6 game boards and 48 tiles.
- 384 French Concentration and Memory Matching Card Game: this is an excellent game for memorizing French vocabulary. It includes 192 pairs of cards, each with a vocabulary word and a corresponding picture, which can be played in a memory-match game.
- Monopoly Classique: kids and teens who already love Monopoly will naturally increase their French language stills with this French version of the classic game.
Books and Stories
- Un Deux Trois: First French Rhymes by Opal Dunn: this darling book features 25 traditional French nursery rhymes. It is beautifully illustrated and includes an audio CD so your child can learn correct pronunciation.
- French Nursery Rhymes by Cali’s Books: this is a beautiful, sturdy board book including six traditional French nursery rhymes, as well as buttons your child can press to hear the rhymes put to song. This is an excellent book for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers learning French.
- Children’s Stories in Dual Language French & English: reading stories in French and English is a great way to build vocabulary and language fluency. This 3-book collection of stories includes both French and English text, as well as a free mp3 audio.
- France: Travel for Kids by Dinobibi: this is a great book for introducing kids to French culture. Including tons of photos and fun facts about France, it’s a great supplement to any homeschool French curriculum.
- In the French Kitchen with Kids by Mardi Michels: this is a wonderful cookbook with instructions on how to make many of France’s most loved foods, from croissants to ratatouille. The recipes are simple and kid-friendly, but younger children will need adult assistance.

- Carnaval: French Learning Songs CD by Whistlesfritz: great for younger kids, this audio CD covers a range of themes such as holidays, food, and seasons. The songs are beautiful and include a range of styles.
