Our picks for the bear online homeschool curriculums for middle school:
- Best All-Around Program: Calvert Homeschool
- Best Christian Program: Monarch Online Curriculum
- Best for Gifted Students: Moving Beyond the Page Online Curriculum
There are many reasons that homeschooling families may prefer online curriculums rather than traditional printed ones. Online programs often require less parental involvement, which is a real advantage for busy parents with multiple kids and parents who are working while homeschooling (if you are a working parent who homeschools, check out our articles Best Homeschool Curriculum for Working Parents – Middle School and Homeschooling While Working Part-Time). Some families like to travel frequently or even full-time while homeschooling, and without the need for tons of books and other materials, online curriculums can make traveling much easier (if you are a traveling homeschooler, don’t forget to check out our articles Best Homeschool Curriculum for Traveling – Middle School and Homeschooling While Traveling). Many families simply appreciate that online homeschool programs require fewer physical materials. And some students actually learn better using online programs because of the different multimedia teaching tools available.
If you are looking for an online homeschool curriculum for your middle school student, you have several excellent options from which to choose. In this article, we’ll tell you about three of our favorite programs, all of which offer curriculum in multiple subjects.
Best All-Around Program
Calvert Homeschool
If you are looking for a solid, engaging, and comprehensive online program, consider Calvert Homeschool. For decades, Calvert published top-notch print format homeschool curriculum, but all of its grade 3-12 programs have now moved completely online. Calvert’s online program combines maximum flexibility with a rich, multimedia interface and an approachable structure that helps students thrive and makes life easy for parents.
With Calvert Homeschool, your child will not need to attend any virtual classes or Zoom lessons. Rather, students can work through the material at their own pace, anytime of day. The online interface keeps track of assignments, schedules, and most grading, so there is minimal work for parents. The program is designed for students to be able to work mostly independently, but parents can log into the Teacher’s Dashboard feature at any time to check on their kids’ progress.
Calvert Homeschool offers courses in all four core subjects (language arts, science, math, and history/geography), as well as electives in keyboarding, coding, health, and career exploration. Courses can be purchased individually, but for the most convenience consider a subscription based-plan, which provides access to all of Calvert’s courses. There are several subscription options, which vary based on subscription length and the number of kids in your home who will be using the program.
Best Christian Program
If you are looking for a comprehensive, well-structured online program with a Christian worldview, we recommend Monarch homeschool curriculum. Published by Alpha Omega Publications (AOP), a leader in Christian homeschool curriculum, Monarch offers a streamlined, easy-to-use interface with engaging, media-rich content.
Monarch’s courses are nearly identical to those in the Lifepac series, also published by AOP, with the exception that they are completely online rather than in print. Each course consists of ten units made up of reading, comprehension questions, and self-tests. Monarch offers diverse, multimedia lessons and materials that work well for different types of learners. Parents appreciate that recordkeeping and grading is done automatically. Students can work independently at their own pace, on their own schedules, with minimal parental involvement.
Monarch’s middle school courses cover the four core subjects (language arts, math, science, and history/geography), as well as several excellent electives, including a Bible course, Career Explorations, Civics, Earth Science, Family & Consumer Science, Health, Keyboarding, and Coding.
Monarch’s courses can be purchased individually, but for the most convenience consider a subscription plan, which provides access to all of Monarch’s courses. Several subscription options are available.
Best for Gifted Students
Moving Beyond the Page Online Curriculum
If your middle schooler is independent, self-motivated, and intellectually curious, consider the middle school curriculum offered by Moving Beyond the Page. Although it can be used by all types of learners, Moving Beyond the Page’s curriculum was designed especially for gifted students.
Moving Beyond the Pages focuses on developing critical, creative thinking skills by challenging students to think about the intersections between language arts, social studies, and science. These three subjects are studied side by side in units that overlap in theme. For example, students read and study The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for language arts while simultaneously learning about antebellum American in social studies, and students do a science unit on the solar system while at the same time learning about the “Age of Discovery” in social studies.
Moving Beyond the Page offers its curriculum in both online and print format (with the option to use both, as well). For the most convenience, purchase the full-year package for your child’s age level, which includes all the curriculum, literature, and manipulatives your student will need.
Moving Beyond the Page does not currently offer a math curriculum at the middle school level, but it recommends the Life of Fred series. The Life of Fred Pre-Algebra series will be at the appropriate math level for most middle school students.
