There are many excellent resources available to give your homeschooled high school student a rich experience with science. Excellent curriculum options along with wonderful supplementary materials – from science subscription boxes to home experiment kits – make it possible for homeschooled high schoolers to flourish when it comes to science.
Although science requirements vary by state and high school, a typical sequence for high school science might include biology in 9th grade, chemistry in 10th grade, physics or earth science in 11th grade, and an optional elective in 12th grade. Be sure to check the science requirements for homeschoolers in your state (particularly if your student will be seeking a diploma). If your student is planning to attend college, you may also want to check into the science requirements for applicants at the universities to which he or she is interested in applying. Additional prerequisites may be required in high school if your child is interested in majoring in a STEM field. Your student may also want to consider taking a science AP course or science AP exam.
Because you are homeschooling, you have the ability to give your high schooler a truly tailored, one-of-a-kind experience with science. Homeschool science often includes an intensive focus on subjects not offered by typical high schools, such as astronomy, evolutionary biology, or the history of science. Research the requirements where you live, explore the many options available, and embark on a science journey that your student will appreciate years after high school has ended.
