Social studies encompasses many subjects – notably history and geography but also government, sociology, psychology, and anthropology. At the elementary level, social studies often focuses on giving the child a basic understanding of geography and history – a child might learn, for example, how to understand a map or what events led to the American Revolution.
Yet social studies can also become much more in-depth for children in this age range, especially when kids have particular interests in a certain time or place. For example, one child might excel in her knowledge of ancient Egyptian history and culture while another will become an expert in South American geography. Elementary-aged children should be allowed and encouraged to pursue learning in whatever topic interests them, and this is especially true when it comes to social studies.
