Encompassing grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, phonics, handwriting, and exposure to literature, language arts prepares children to be able to understand the world around them and effectively communicate with others. For this reason, it is vital that children gain a firm foundation in language arts in the elementary years. There are many different approaches to teaching elementary language arts in the homeschool environment – from the Classical emphasis on subject mastery to the Charlotte Mason-style engagement with good literature. Many homeschoolers combine multiple approaches when teaching language arts to their elementary children.
